I'm  based in Berlin, travel a lot and love my work – designing magazines, newspapers and journals for all kinds of readers. Here are some valuable things I’ve learned which inform this work.

Design is far too important
to be left to designers

David Hepworth, publisher, writer and broadcaster wrote these words in his column for the Guardian newspaper some time ago. They’re very wise.

Every f ***ing cover is special!

The late Felix Dennis, maverick publisher, poet and my first employer shouted this at me after I suggested creating a ‘special’ cover for an anniversary issue of one of his magazines. Ouch! then and Ouch! still.

You can’t drink while you pray

but you can pray while you drink.

It’s not surprising that the best ideas sometimes occur outside of the work environment, but they do need encouragement. And it’s nice to have a drink too.

Words don’t mean anything
these days.

Whether you’re dealing with words or images it’s what you leave out that matters.

Vive l’Évolution!

Revolution is not always what’s needed, simple improvement is often the best option. As a designer you sometimes have to resist your desire to rebel.

Design abhorrs a coincidence.

A designer should never leave anything to chance. Happy accidents are fine but they should be an option not an obligation.

Beauty at the service of utility.

…and not the other way round. If something is well designed its usefulness will outshine its looks.

Brand, image, content.

The three areas where editorial design matters: how you’re identified, how you’re perceived and how you communicate.

Here are some sample pages from publications I’ve designed.

LONELY PLANET MAGAZINE

BBC Magazines, UK. Launched in 2008 – these are pages from the very first issue – this award-winning  magazine has established itself as one of the leading travel publications around the world. Its  commitment to intelligent, inquisitive travel journalism as well as wonderful photography has won it many fans.

HISTORY REVEALED

Immediate Media, UK. One of the most exciting projects I’ve  worked on – a modern approach to popular history. Informative, entertaining and innovative, each issue features a 20-page special story on one historical period, complemented by a package of great ideas and very eclectic imagery – and no olde-worlde fonts to seen anywhere!

L’ILLUSTRÉ

Ringier Romandie, Switzerland. Published since 1923, L’illustré is an institution, a popular ‘illustrated weekly’ which covers a huge range of topics from the highly personal to the truly global. The sheer breadth of imagery is a joy – and sometimes a shock – to work with but each issue is a reminder that there’s nothing as interesting as human life.

foto MAGAZIN Jahr Top Special Verlag, Germany. I’ve become increasingly involved in specialist magazines, which I love because of the range of design skills required. foto Magazin illustrates this well – great images, rigorous reviews and lots of technical advice pages, quite a challenge to form into a coherent visual package.

My many years of experience have enabled me to develop three areas in which my abilities can be best implemented by you my client.

One word but many possibilities. From a few hours of brainstorming and free-thinking with your editorial team to completely re-conceiving the existing editorial package. I can serve as a bouncing board for new ideas or as an experienced, impartial creative co-worker and contributor.

A chance for you to get some beneficial input and for me to prove my ability to supply astute editorial analysis. At its simplest it means an initial conversation and an agreed time period for me to assess your publication, resulting in a clear critique which requires no further commitment on your part.

Most of my time is spent actually implementing the ideas you (or of course we!) have collated, to create a coherent visual concept.
I have vast experience in designing publications
for all kinds of readers.
But of course, it is my
clients who define how we create together.

Some kind words from my clients.

Job titles change over the years – these were correct at the time of writing.

‘It’s always tremendously exciting to see a magazine that Martin has launched or redesigned. He never imposes a design but works with all the team to understand the market and the readers. He has a rare understanding of both the editorial principles and the commercial constraints of magazines and he knows that great design is, above all, about delivering content.

For my money, the best magazine designer working in Europe.’

Kevin Cox, Founder, Origin Publishing, Bristol

‘Martin has designed many of our launches over the years, including most recently Lonely Planet Magazine, targetting a range of different markets. Martin is one of the outstanding magazine designers of his generation.’

Peter Phippen, Managing Director, BBC Magazines, London

‘Truly an editorial designer – and not one of those fluffy ones. He’s my first and favourite choice to work with at developing a new idea. A session with him is like a gym work-out with the most demanding of personal trainers. He’s creative, challenging and thoughtful with an obsessional attention to detail and an intuitive understanding of the needs of the potential reader.’

Nicholas Brett, Deputy Managing Director, BBC Magazines

‘A brilliant professional.’

Maribel Escalona, Editor, OK! magazine, Madrid

‘I had the opportunity to develop various projects in collaboration with Martin Dixon, both in Switzerland and in other countries where Edipresse Group is present. He is extremely creative and constantly able to propose constructive solutions, always attentively listening to his clients’ needs.’

Pierre Lamunière, Chairman, Edipresse group, Lausanne

‘Martin Dixon is much more than a designer. He’s never satisfied with simply translating an editorial concept: he interprets and enhances. His talent lies in his ability to bring his great visual vocabulary to bear on the specific demands of the project, contributing truly original ideas.’

Théo Bouchat, CEO, Edipresse Suisse, Lausanne

‘A true genius of editorial design. His talent as a designer is combined with real journalistic intelligence. Whenever we use his services we’re sure of a successful result.’

Daniel Pillard, General Manager, Ringier Romandie, Lausanne

‘Martin is one of the greats of his profession. He combines like very few others both visual and editorial competence to create great visual storytelling.’

Roland Tichy Editor-in-Chief, Wirtschaftswoche, Düsseldorf

‘I first commissioned Martin to look at Golf Magazin. His approach led us not just to a reappraisal of the design of the magazine but also to getting the best from our editorial content and to communicating more effectively with our readers. He has since done the same for many of our most important publications.’

Alexandra Jahr, Managing Director,

Jahr Top Special Verlag, Hamburg

‘Martin revolutionised magazine design in Singapore. He blazed a trail and taught us all – editors, designers and photographers – how to combine words and pictures for maximum impact. He combines an appreciation for language with a tremendous creative flair, a tireless work ethic, and a remarkable ability to get on with his colleagues. A joy to work with.’

Tan Wang Joo, Group Editor, Singapore Press Holdings

‘He has an amazing ability to work with an exceptionally wide range of subject matters, and diverse teams, and still deliver consistently excellent results. He’s also been instrumental in developing the distinctive visual identity of our magazine portfolio.’

Andy Benham, Publishing Director, BBC Magazines, Bristol

‘Over the years he has proved time and again he understands the reader. As an editor, one has the feeling we speak the same language.’

Peter Rothenbühler, Deputy Editorial Director,

Edipresse Suisse, Lausanne

‘Martin is great to work with - a real catalyst, getting the same high standards from those around him that he sets for himself.’

Dominic Murray, Publisher, Lonely Planet and Gardeners’ World magazines, BBC Magazines, London

‘Martin fully understands the needs of the editorial staff and never tries to impose a trendy, selfish concept on our publications. His work on Le Matin was extremely effective and creative. He’s very valuable to us.’

Ariane Dyer, Editor-in-Chief, Le Matin, Lausanne

‘Martin proved to be an inspirational, intelligent leader of our design direction throughout the gestation of Lonely Planet Magazine.’

Peter Grunert, Editor, Lonely Planet Magazine, London

‘Martin is as indispensable to journalism as the director is to the theatre. The best.’

Jean-Luc Iseli, Joint Editor-in-Chief, L’illustré, Lausanne
